Marketing for Professionals - Real Benefits

May 15th, 2008

Even professionals have to answer the question “What’s in it for me?” in a way that I (your potential client/patient/customer) perceive as an immediate benefit. Wednesday, I saw a free blood pressure check at the local grocery store and thought I might as well get one. I didn’t pay much attention to who or what organization was doing it until I sat down. It was being done by a new chiropractic doctor in town with the obvious intent to attract new patients. He was a pleasant young fellow who took my BP and requested I fill out a short form. No problem, I thought it was a fair trade for the “free” BP. The marketing problem is that he didn’t offer me a real benefit. His offer was for a free spinal exam and two x rays. So what I thought. I know my spine is not as aligned as it could be and has some narrowing and arthritis. I also don’t get a thrill out of getting x rayed - if you want to go looking for trouble, I’m sure you can find it. So instead seeing how I will find a way to lose weight, feel better, or get a free treatment, I could only see someone trying to “entice” me into the office, so I would be trapped into a long series of treatments that for all I know would cost me a lot of money. He also didn’t have any hand outs. I think I know more than the average person about chiropractic medicine, but I would guess that a nice informational brochure to take with a person would have more potential for business than a business card (on the back of which he wrote my BP) and a verbal offer for two free x rays.

Twitter - Useful or Annoying?

May 14th, 2008

Twitter can be a fun and interesting way to create a following. Some marketers are looking too much like spammers. Let people know about the sites you are looking at and working on. Just keep the blatant selling down. Curiosity will get people to click on your url.
